Who are we?

Unbowed means to not submit to the status quo, and we wish to take this idea into action, to fight against the status quo in our city, to fight the prevalent isolation rampant inequality and that have become the norm.Too often people believe that making a difference is a thing that begins and ends within the halls of parliament. Luckily that is not the case, creating change is not a thing delivered to our communities every three years in a ballot box, it is a thing that we have the ability to do every day.Canberra Unbowed is founded on this, that change is possible when communities come together united!What we decided to build is a Mutual Aid organisation, focused on building connections between all the incredible organisations in Canberra already doing incredible work. What we strive to do is support these organisations wherever we can, through hosting events, providing volunteers, letterboxing, getting donations, whatever, in order to support our local communities.We believe in the principal of solidarity, not charity.

The Six Point Program1. Unity in our communitiesCanberra Unbowed recognises that our communities are ignored, fragmented and decaying, Canberra Unbowed also recognises that only through collectively sharing resources, volunteers, skills and connections in our communities can we hope to build solidarity in our communities. If we wish to stand any chance against rising inequality, food insecurity and isolation then the first step is to come together in a broad coalition for our community.2. Welfare of our communities:Canberra Unbowed demands all people in our communities are entitled to adequate food, clothing and housing, it is the primary purpose of Canberra Unbowed to organise, advocate and agitate for these basic human rights.3. Organisation of our CommunitiesCommunity organising does not exist in parallel to politics or the legislative assembly, it is the basis of politics. Our community's involvement in our work is fundamental to our purpose, organising our communities is crucial not just in achieving outcomes but in the grassroots development of the power of our communities and the people in them.4. End to the Exploitation of our CommunitiesThe poverty, desperation and crucially the exploitation we see in the communities of Canberra today are linked to the structures of our society, they are inseparable from the organisation of society. Canberra Unbowed believes that society and the structures of it, must be reshaped in the least as to address the overwhelming decay we witness daily in Canberra. As so we believe that we must push for long term, real solutions to the problems of food insecurity, poverty, isolation, and additional spectrum of issues that haunt our communities.5. Education of our CommunitiesWe see the education of our community as paramount to our fundamental goals and purposes, without education in our communities there is no way that our work can be done. The education of the people is the only way we can eliminate the bigoted and reactionary poisons that prevent Solidarity, advocacy, organisation and agitation for and in our communities.6. Solidarity in our CommunitiesWe believe that we need to band together as a community regardless of political ideology, that we all have a common goal of making life better for those who are suffering the most in society, and building real solidarity with one another. It is paramount that we are able to build a coalition of those willing, in order to make a real difference in Canberra.
